Driving Guide & Places to Go

Driving Tips for Dubai

Driving in Dubai is straightforward with excellent road infrastructure and clear signage. Here are some tips to help you navigate:

  • Traffic Laws: Adhere to local traffic laws, including wearing seatbelts and not using your phone while driving.
  • Speed Limits: The speed limit in urban areas is usually 60-80 km/h, while highways can range from 100-140 km/h.
  • Parking: Dubai offers ample parking spaces, both on-street and in parking garages. Use designated parking areas to avoid fines.
  • Fuel Stations: Fuel is inexpensive and readily available throughout the city.
  • Toll Roads: Be aware of toll gates on certain highways; ensure your rental car is equipped with a toll pass.
Places to Explore with Your Rental Car
  • Desert Safari: Take a short drive out of the city for an exhilarating desert safari experience, including dune bashing, camel riding, and traditional Bedouin camps.
  • Hatta: Visit the Hatta region to explore its beautiful mountains, heritage village, and scenic dam.
  • Al Ain: Drive to the oasis city of Al Ain, known for its lush greenery, historic forts, and natural springs.
  • Fujairah: Enjoy a scenic drive to Fujairah, located on the east coast, offering beautiful beaches and excellent diving spots.

Closest Airports for Car Hire in Dubai

  • Dubai International Airport (DXB): Located just a short distance from the city center, this major airport provides a wide range of international flights and easy access to your rental car.
  • Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC): Situated in Dubai South, this airport is a convenient option for travelers and offers seamless car hire services.

The United Arab Emirates is represented by seven Emirates; Abu Dhabi (the Capital), Fujairah, Ajman, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah, Umm al Quwain and Dubai, which is probably the best known. You will be spoilt for choice on how to fill your time in Dubai. Dubai has over 30 shopping malls alone, and each has to compete so they have added amazing attractions to entice you!

Dubai Mall is located in Downtown Dubai adjacent to the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa which is 830 metres high and consists of luxury apartments and the boutique Armani hotel.  It is advisable to pre-book your visit to the Burj Khalifa online as prices are cheaper than just showing up.  Dubai Mall also has its own Olympic sized ice-rink located on the ground-floor and is open daily from 10am.  You can also visit one of the world's largest suspended Aquariums and underwater zoo where it houses thousands of aquatic animals, comprising over 140 species.

Shoppers will be in paradise at this mall as whatever you want is here whether it is high-end designer luxury or familiar high-street shops. A 15-minute drive away is the Mall of the Emirates which is famous for its indoor ski-slope, Ski Dubai which is open daily from 9am to midnight.  It also hosts one of the regions most popular family entertainment attractions Magic Planet.  Shops are in abundance with several high-end luxury stores.

The lesser known Ibn Battua Mall is popular with locals as it isn't as large as some of its competitors and is mainly set out across one level only.  It is decorated with the adventures of the Explorer Ibn Battua who set off to explore the world in June 1335 at the age of 21.  His journey spanned 24 years during which time he visited Tunisia, Egypt, Persia, India, China and Andalusia which are the names of each of the shopping areas within the Mall.

After traipsing the malls you will gladly want to put your feet up.  Hotels are aplenty and most of them are luxurious and 5-stars.  The famous Burj Al Arab is a 7-star hotel and sits proudly on its own man-made island, an iconic sail-shaped silhouette.  If you stay at the Atlantis Hotel on the Palm Jumeirah you will find it hard to leave!  This 46-hectare resort has everything you need to enjoy including a 17-hectare waterpark, marine and entertainment attractions and world-renowned and award-winning restaurants.  The Four Seasons hotel and resort can be found in two locations; the hotel is in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) which is the hub of the financial zone and is buzzing with City types during the working week but fairly quiet over the weekends.  The Four Seasons resort is newly opened at Jumeirah Beach offering 5-star luxury all the way.

Dubai has recently introduced 4-star hotels mainly located in the Al Barsha area.  Deira is an older part of Dubai located on the Creek and it has a good selection of 3 and 4-star hotels.   There are many natural attractions in the UAE too and no trip to them would be complete without doing a desert safari.  Hotels will recommend licensed tour operators but if you are daring and want to go camping or bumping over the sand dunes yourself, then Rhino can help you locate the appropriate 4x4 vehicle from our numerous rental locations.

It is no wonder that so many people are heading to the UAE as it has everything that the holiday maker could possibly want including eye popping architecture, great food, a vibrant nightlife, sunbathing on beautiful beaches and sporting events.
