Abu Dhabi is the Capital of the United Arab Emirates, boasting the largest land mass and is actually the second largest City in the UAE having just over 2.7 million residents.  It is a vibrant city and this is reflected in the modern skyline of towers and shopping centres.  Visitors have plenty of choice to fulfill their days as Abu Dhabi is fast becoming a multi-choice destination offering more than 5-star hotels and beach holidays.

Adrenalin fueled experiences such as Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld, both based on Yas Island, attract visitors from near and afar.  Culture vultures will love the unique architecture and open spaces of Le Louvre Abu Dhabi which reportedly cost the founders 1 billion euros.  Apparently they paid a whopping 400 million euros to use the name Le Louvre!

The Grand Mosque of Sheikh Zayed is one of the regions finest, spread over 30 acres and is definitely worth a visit.  The magnificent structure took a decade to build which is evident when you see the huge Swarovski chandeliers, artifacts of gold, silver & marble and the exquisite floral mosaics.  Men must wear full length trousers to visit the Mosque and Ladies will be provided with an abaya and shayla (long black gown and head scarfe) upon arrival to wear over their clothes.

Afternoon tea at Emirates Palace is very civilized and it's worth taking a stroll around this vast iconic hotel landmark afterwards to work off the clotted cream.  The Palace is over one kilometre long from wing to wing and boasts 1,002 chandeliers, the largest weighing 2.5 tonnes.

  • Although Abu Dhabi was officially founded in 1790, archaeologists have found traces of human habitation that dates back to more than 3,000 years ago.
  • If you drop rubbish and it does not land in a bin be prepared to pay a hefty fine.
  • Even if you are a married couple, it does not give you the right to show off your feelings in a public place.  Things like walking hand-in-hand is not permitted and kissing in public could get you a heavily imposed fine.
