The Umm Al Quwain Fort has a very impressive display of jewellery and weapons that had been found at the famous Al Dur archeological site. This famous building is also known as the Al Ali Fort and was said to be built around 1786 and constructed by His Highness Sheikh Rashid Majid Mu’alla to protect the town and its harbour. It was also used by the Sheikh for his residence and his government seat. This famous Fort is also unfortunately known for the tragedy of 1929 when the ruling Sheikh was shot by his two of cousins in an attempt to take over power. The coup failed and the people of Umm Al Quwain took the law into their own hands and set about killing the culprits by setting the Fort on fire!
