It all started in the 1970’s when the late ruler His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Al Maktoum announced that he would build a new town at Jebel Ali.  It would be home to what is now one of the greatest ports in the world.  The port was opened in 1979 and the international container business started to take shape at the new facility.  It took time to grow as this port was seen to be too far out of town as most companies traded in Deira creek, so they had to look further afield to attract new clientele.

It was when His Excellency Sultan bin Sulaymen took over the port things started to change.  Jebel Ali Free zone saw a huge influx from Japanese industries such as Sony and Awi as they saw great potential for the middle east and as a trading hub from Dubai outwards.  It was not until the merger of the two ports (Jebel Ali and Rashidiya) under the one umbrella of JAFZA that this port started to see tremendous growth and more big names started to settle in Jebel Ali such as Mercedes and Swarovski.

This then coincided with the need for more investment and a new updated master plan was drawn up to help what was now becoming a very large and very profitable trading hub.  The consultants needed to understand what new additions would be needed to fulfill these new client requirements.  JAFZA started to grow its infrastructure of the port with the announcement of new modern warehouse facilities to cater for clients of all sizes and shapes.  This included new staff accommodation with leisure and sport facilities to give better lifestyles to their staff.  New offices were built so they could attract new and smaller enterprises and to help attract the larger corporates.  As time has passed and JAFZA has grown, its successes have been mirrored all over the UAE as a testament to how a good idea can become a world class business venture.
